Decorating Your Secondary Classroom

decorating your secondary classroom

For years I switched schools and classrooms and didn’t want to invest the time or money into setting up a space I loved. I think subconsciously I was afraid the minute I set up shop I would be forced to leave again. I’m ready to call my space my own! I spend the majority of my day in my classroom. It should feel warm, welcoming and reflect who I am as a person. I’ve begun gathering inspiration for my space and mapping out a mental plan before I get to work. Today, I’m mapping out my ideas for myself and sharing some of the key ideas I’ve had in mind.

  1. Creating a Color SchemeIMG_2497

Look familiar? Not only are these the colors I chose to represent my Teach with Adoration online presence, but the colors I want to pull into my space as well. While I want to create a soft and inviting room, I want it to feel comfortable for the males in my room as well. So I’ll be pulling from a blue palette and adding touches of masculinity with wood and dark accents. Oh, and I’m slightly obsessed with Shibori, Japanese tie-dye, at the moment 🙂

2. Artwork

Classroom artwork will be the most influential in creating a cohesive look throughout. I’ll keep it simple with Shibori inspired prints. I may even give a few a try! Excited to build some large, basic wooden frames for my walls that I can hang black and white motivational prints from.

3. Window Treatments

Classrooms can feel very cold in nature simply because of the number of hard surfaces. Adding window treatments will help to soften the overall feel of the room. Also, I have long, narrow windows without any window coverings which is problematic for two reasons; I can’t shield the harsh morning sun and I can’t properly protect my students in a lock-down situation. Problems solved!

4. Plants

If we can’t be outside, let’s bring the outside inside! 🙂 I’m fairly certain adding some plants to our space will do wonders for my emotional stability, so it’s sure to help my students as well.

5. Wall Coverings

I’m on the hunt for a simple, clean fadeless paper. This white shiplap by Pacon is perfect. It’s not overly designed with small planks and a ton of nail holes. Fadeless paper is the closest thing you can get to painting your space…unless of course you’re allowed to paint your space. In which case, I’m jealous.

6. Custom Whiteboard Vinyl Lettering
